Decontamination & Decommissioning
GEO conducted a
decontamination and decommissioning project (D&D) at a site that
operates an active medium-caliber ammunition manufacturing and testing
facility in Illinois. As a result of the assembly and testing of
munitions containing depleted uranium, radiological contamination occurred at the site. GEO was tasked to design and complete a Preliminary Assessment and Site Investigation to determine distribution
and concentration of radiological munitions constituents and to
decontaminate and/or remove facilities that had been contaminated. GEO
completed the radiological sampling/survey of over 100,000 ft2 of surface
area, completed the engineering evaluation and cost analysis for the D&D of the facilities, prepared the
D&D Work Plan, obtained the necessary radiological permitting and
implemented the D&D program. This process saved over 75% of the facility from demolition.
